Een dichter begint aan een nieuwe bundel met een verschrikkelijk verdrietig gedicht over de liefde. Terwijl de letters wachten op het volgende gedicht, blijven de bladzijden leeg. De dichter is zó overmand door liefdesverdriet, dat hij niet meer werkt. Daar worden de letters nogal onrustig van, want wat moeten ze zonder dichter? Ze proberen zelf wat te dichten, maar dat wordt niets. Dan bedenken ze een plan: ze zoeken een nieuwe liefde voor hun dichter, zodat hij weer opvrolijkt en aan het werk gaat. Er komen letters van een andere dichter op hun contactadvertentie af, om te kijken of er misschien wat mogelijk is tussen de twee dichters. Al gauw blijken die nieuwe - rode- letters heel brutaal en opdringerig. Ze willen het hele boek overnemen. Dat laten de zwarte letters niet op zich zitten. Een hevige strijd is het gevolg.
