Op haar tiende verjaardag krijgt Metty, net als alle kinderen, een magische tattoo op haar hand. Deze tattoo zegt iets over haar lot. Metty hoopt op iets spannends, zoals wereldreiziger, ontdekker of avonturier worden. Maar op haar hand verschijnt een doodskop. Ze is voorbestemd om een moordenaar te worden...
Na haar verjaardag wordt ze door haar vader in een afgelegen huis op het platteland verborgen gehouden. Maar wanneer hij op mysterieuze wijze verdwijnt, wordt ze door haar merkwaardige tante meegenomen naar Nieuw-Londen, een zwevende stad met magische windfietsen, vliegende gondels en kronkelende straatjes die allerlei geheimen verbergen. Daar hoort ze geruchten over een schimmige organisatie die bekendstaat als de Zwarte Motten, en ze krijgt al snel het vermoeden dat die iets te maken heeft met haar vaders verdwijning, en misschien ook wel met haar eigen lot…
