Tijdens het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw begonnen particuliere bedrijven in Nederlands-Indië eigen betaalmiddelen uit te geven voor gebruik op hun plantages. De metalen tokens werden uitgegeven vanaf ca. 1870, en vanaf 1890 werden ook biljetten gedrukt en in omloop gebracht. Het hoogtepunt van de uitgifte van deze tokens en biljetten situeerde zich rond de eeuwwisseling en omvatte een tijdsperiode van ongeveer twintig Jaar, maar enkele series dateren uit een iets latere periode 1905-1915. De meerderheid van dit plantagegeld circuleerde in gebieden aan de oostkust van Sumatra.
De voornaamste reden om dit plantagegeld uit te geven wat het gebrek aan zilveren muntgeld in deze gebieden. Veel van deze cultuurondernemingen ………..
