Muller-Koeberlé Pinot Noir Duo
La Geiss 2022 is an exquisite wine that has a deep red colour broken down in a brilliance of purple reflections with ruby hue.
The nose offers fruity tones of small red fruits, redcurrants, raspberries and Morello cherries.
Spicy layer of white pepper and vague trace of licorice.
The palate is lively, balanced, elegant, daintily fruity with a crispy and fresh structure.
Silky tannins frame the wine while providing harmony and length.
Although Alsace is notably known for its white wines, numerous documents providing cellar inventories of abbeys and wine taxes from churches in the Middle Ages reveal a significant amount of red wine. Among the 40 grape varieties used at the time Pinot Noir was at the top. Curiously enough, production decreased at the end of the 16th century and only some Alsace villages preserved the tradition of red wines (Ottrott, Saint Léonard, Boersch, Saint Hippolyte, Rodern, Marlenheim…). So what some consider today to be an increasingly successful novelty is in fact an important part of Alsacian history.
Saint Hippolyte Rouge 2020
One more gem from Alsatian domaine Muller-Koeberle.
One more Pinot Noir, this time from a vineyard planted in 1961 by Eugène Muller and Jean Koeberle, David’s great grandfather and grandfather, founders of the domaine.
Pioneer parcel of Saint-Hippolyte Rouge.
Intensive, deep purple colour with ruby sheen.
Aromas of blackberry, black cherry with an uplifting kick of fig and kirsch.
The attack is a powerful p(b)unch of black fruit, rose blossom and bay leaves.
Moderate lively acidity with resolved plush tannins.
One month of whole bunch maceration was a daring move but the result is exhilarating.
