De Sierra Nevada is een majestueuze bergketen in het noordelijke deel van Colombia, grenzend aan de prachtige stranden van de Caribische kust en reikt tot 18.700 voet hoog. Cacao de Colombia installeerde onlangs een ultramodern fermentatie- en droogcentrum in de lager gelegen gemeenschap van Macondo, waar ze voornamelijk cacao betrekken van ongeveer 10 boerenfamilies in het departement Magdalena.
De technische expertise van deze boeren is uitstekend: boeren doen zelfs hun eigen bestuivings experimenten om de kwaliteit en opbrengsten te verbeteren, die momenteel rond de 700 kg / hectare in de regio liggen. Cacao de Colombia biedt de afgelopen 6 jaar technische ondersteuning en een stabiele markt aan boeren in de Sierra Nevada, en de resultaten zijn duidelijk in zowel de kwaliteit van de cacao als de impact op de boeren. Boeren rapporteren een 72% hoger jaarinkomen dan voordat deze nieuwe markt bestond.
