Hedy en haar broer Spencer brengen de kerstvakantie door bij hun opa. Ooit was hij een beroemd illusionist en zijn huis op de heuvel staat vol met mysterieuze snuisterijen. Als Hedy en Spencer berichten op stoffige fotolijsten ontvangen, verandert Kerstmis op slag in een missie om het mysterie van de verdwijning van hun oma op te lossen. Houdt hun opa misschien iets voor hen achter? Met de hulp van een (pratend) hertenhoofd, een (ook pratend) berenkleed en ander lichaamloze geesten moeten Spencer en Hedy het opnemen tegen waterspuwers, raven en mysterieuze magiërs om achter de waarheid te komen. Een spannend en fantasierijk verhaal, mooi verteld in een heerlijk winterse sfeer.
