Description
Bregje is een vondeling. Ze is elf jaar en woont in een weeshuis in Leiden. De Spanjaarden staan op het punt voor de tweede keer de stad te bezetten en er is een grote kans op te weinig voedsel. De Moeder van het weeshuis wil alle kinderen onderbrengen bij gezinnen in de stad, zodat hun kans op overleven groter wordt. Bregje wordt geplaatst bij vrouw Louwe, een vroedvrouw. Het is een eigenzinnige vrouw die haar eigen plan trekt en goed weet wat ze wil. Bregje blijkt daar goed op haar plek te zijn. Maar dan breekt de pest uit in de stad en loopt alles anders dan gedacht.
