De Roma-jongen Ciprian komt uit een familie van berentemmers. Ze reizen door Roemenië en treden op met hun beer. Als hun camper het op een dag begeeft en ze bedreigd worden door de lokale bewoners en politie, is hun enige optie om de beer achter te laten en met twee mannen naar Parijs te reizen. De reis is ongelooflijk duur, maar de mannen willen het bedrag wel voorschieten. Er is immers werk genoeg in Parijs, dus ze kunnen het geld later wel terugbetalen.
Eenmaal in Parijs wordt al snel duidelijk dat Ciprian en zijn familie het bedrag niet kunnen ophoesten, wat ze ook doen om aan geld te komen. De schuld blijft zich verdubbelen. Omdat ze Frankrijk illegaal zijn binnengegaan, staan ze volledig onder controle van de mensensmokkelaars, die geweld niet schuwen. Hun toekomst is uitzichtloos. Tot Ciprian schaken ontdekt in een park, en een van de schaaksters inziet hoeveel talent hij daarvoor heeft…
