Haar vader is naar Amerika verhuisd in de hoop daar genoeg geld te verdienen om ook de rest van het gezin over te laten komen. Maar als Sofies moeder komt te overlijden begint ze samen met haar zusje en neef via Rotterdam met vele andere landverhuizers aan de lange oversteek naar Amerika. Hun reis is niet zonder avonturen en gevaren: zo raakt ze haar zusje in de drukte bijna kwijt, worden ze op elk station gecontroleerd, dreigen ze teruggestuurd te worden, en ontmoeten ze allerlei bijzondere mensen. Dan breekt er tijdens een heftige storm midden op de oceaan brand uit op het schip... Zullen ze Amerika nog wel bereiken?
