De schetsen van Ronan Bouroullec zijn gebaseerd op de methode van het zogenaamde intuïtieve tekenen. Die techniek stelt hem in staat nieuwe beelden te ontwikkelen en de onderbewuste delen van de geest aan te spreken. Het intuïtief tekenen vindt zijn oorsprong in de literaire wortels van het surrealisme en de 'écriture automatique' (automatisch schrijven), waarbij het bewustzijn volledig uitgeschakeld moet worden tijdens het schrijven van een tekst. Die literaire vorm heeft op zijn beurt de inhoud van veel werken van surrealistische kunstenaars beïnvloed en wordt vaak weerspiegeld in meanderende en vervagende vormen.
